Spring Forward, Fall Back

Daylight savings time is upon us again, reminding us that the days are getting shorter and the holiday season is right around the bend. For some, this Spring Forward Fall Back period is a welcome change, but for many it can be a cause of great stress. Taking the time to stay grounded and care for ourselves helps us to enjoy and embrace this season rather than just trudging through.

If you live in a cold climate, now is a good time to burrow in, slow down and take care. Look to nature for clues on how to best respect the needs of your body and mind. Darker evenings call for more rest. Colder weather means a good time to eat warm, nourishing foods and liquids. Trees may shed their leaves and lay dormant in the winter, but it doesn’t mean that they will not bloom again in the spring.

For many, holidays signal a stressful, and often guilt-inducing, series of tasks. There is an awful lot of pressure in our society to make holidays “perfect”. Take a step back and realize what elements would make the holidays perfectly joyful for you. For some, a big production is energizing and for others not celebrating at all feels best. Take the pressure off and remind yourself that the purpose of the holidays is to relax and feel joy in the middle of a tough season. If you are happy, those around you will feel happier and isn’t that what it’s all about?
